Background
What is Shop For Charity Day?
3 years in the development, Shop For Charity Day was launched March 22, 2005 from Bellingham, WA. This online shopping mall raises income for organizations as purchases are made. Individuals choose their favorite cause (or add it) and then shop from hundreds of stores on the mall. The mission of SFCD is to "change the way fundraising is done." Its goal is to have supporters of organizations across the country shop every Tuesday on this mall to benefit their cause so that "no one will purchase an item or use a service without benefiting a cause." Since it is an online shopping mall, it is accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
Ginny Dye is founder and CEO of Shop For Charity Day.
Who is served by Shop For Charity Day?
Shoppers designate which cause will receive the proceeds from their shopping. Any organization from the local library or public school, to national organizations like World Vision or Special Olympics will benefit. Shoppers have the satisfaction of knowing that as they purchase items on this mall, people are being helped.
How does Shop For Charity Day work?
When supporters access the SFCD website they will be introduced to the featured organization of the week. They may choose this organization, choose from a list of organizations, or add one.
Unlike similar malls, purchases are tracked by organization and not by individual shopper. Therefore there is no log-in or registration of any kind required of the shopper. They simply choose their organization and begin shopping.
This is a full-featured online shopping mall with hundreds of stores and millions of products. Every purchase generates income for the organization specified by the shopper.
What kind of organization can be added to the site?
Any organization, business, or cause of any size can be added to the site provided they fall within the SFCD criteria. Causes are not required to be 501 c 3. The cause must be legal, nondiscriminatory, and not related to terrorism, hate-crimes or pornography of any kind. At this time it must be based in the United States. SFCD retains the right to delete groups at its sole discretion that it deems do not fit the above criteria.
